Almost everyone is talking about how Goa’s standard of education is low, going down, inferior compared to other states, going to dogs etc. etc. But, has anyone heard the latest? It has been whispered into my sensitive ears that the Education Board has come out with model answers to model questions. Teachers are expected to follow the ‘model’ way specially during correction of answer papers. The unbelievable part of all this is that teachers who do not teach the subject are expected to correct the answer papers in that subject by following the model answers. That means that enterprising students who answer the questions differently and perhaps more efficiently will be looked down upon by the correctors, just because the answers are non model answers. Now, Goans should stop saying that the standard of education in Goa is going to dogs. It has already been eaten up and the dogs are eyeing for the next in line which is dear to Goa and Goans. “ The Communal Harmony ”
And there was a hue and cry about the pilferage of petroleum products in Vasco in a most daring manner that anyone could ever think of. The style smacks of the ‘French Connection’ but even more versatile, I should say. It seems that a certain South based police official of high rank has been getting paid Rs. 4 lacs per month, a lower rank officer a lac a month., from the proceeds of the pilferage. By any means, this must have been a multi-crore business. No wonder, the politicians has been increasing and decreasing a few paise here and a few paise there and fooling the general public while they were minting money all the time. Do we see C B I here?? And the guys who have been arrested even get bail. Why not? It is upto to the police to file the charge sheets. If they themselves are involved, then the criminals go scot free after a short farce. This is something to think about, and goes to show that Goa’s guts are rotted to the putrifying stench, while goans have been snoring.
And as if there was not enough news in the newspapers already, goan schools have started making headlines. On the one hand, there is Mater Dei in Saligao which is, for its part, facing the ire of the education department because of the fabricated stories told to it by one enterprising Mr. Mitra, who is said to be a favoured soul in the high flying circle of people who are hell bent on discrediting minority run schools. And on the other hand there is another minority run school, I am proud to say my ex-school, the St. Xavier’s High, Moira.which is making headlines in one direction one day and in another direction the next day. One day a bright student accuses the best teacher of harassment, and the teacher is transferred to another school. The next day the whole school is practically at the door of the teacher’s house begging her to come back. We were just saying that our goan education standard has gone to dogs. And here we have students of 6th., 7th, 8th. Class who have drafted a memorandum to the diocesan board to give them their teacher back. With headstrong head people who mingle freely with petty, conniving local politicians in the making, it is but natural that student power could be channelise next to bring down governments . However, I am still trying to get the puzzle sorted out as to how a bright student could be accusing the best teacher of harassment in the first place.
And as per Rajan Narayan’s editorial in today’s Herald, the diversion of the Madei waters by Karnataka is a foregone conclusion despite the feeble attempts made by Goa’s government in the last stages. Goa’s fragile treasury could be straining against the additional cost of flying and entertaining in Delhi the long standing non performers and hypocrites of Goa., who want to come be in the lime light of a dying fight. And again, the finger is pointed to the snoozing, snoring Goans. For a game fight between two neighboring teams from Goa and Karnataka, the referee , but naturally, has to be from Andra or Tamilnad. However, we are privileged to have a Kerelite who is perhaps 3/4th. Goan , impartial and hit on the head type.
